Great article today at CTV.ca regarding the idea of forgoing the traditional greeting of a handshake as a preventative measure during cold and flu season.
They mention two important points:
- In Asia where handshakes are not the tradition there is no noticable difference in rates of influenza or the common cold
- The one I think is most important is the power of human touch. People need that physical contact, it helps us all feel connected, it conveys recognition and respect.
Even if they tried I believe that the handshake is way to ingrained in our daily lives, habits, and culture to ever be replaced. There would have to be concrete evidence of the health benefits and many years of indoctrination to eliminate our formal greeting.
